Halen knows the sparks igniting under her fingertips are dangerous. She has spent her entire life trying to quell the tingly feelings that make her destroy things, but now that she is back in Rockaway Beach, where she watched her father drown, the flames have become impossible to tame. Halen is trying to hold on, but when she is thrust into a mysterious new world, the underwater realm of Elosia, she unravels the secrets of her past and can’t help but ignite. As she explores Elosia, she realizes her life has been a lie. And when those who have deceived her come to her for help, Halen must choose —walk away or unleash the magic that could destroy them all.

Since I have tons of untouched books on NetGalley, I’ve decided to finally clear them all. I would be reading books from NetGalley moving forward. It’s just sad that there were books that I can’t seem to download anymore since they’re already on archived. Sigh. I’ve been so distracted by a lot of books that I’ve also neglected a huge amount of them on NetGalley. So to jump start this goal, I’ve started with this book. I’ve heard so many good stuff so I’m excited. Here’s a five star, three star and one star review respectively. Got them from book lovers on Goodreads. 😀

I loved this book. It is such a different take on Mermaids. It’s a pretty quick flowing story and It never slows down. It becomes a hard to put down and it is the first book in an exciting new series. The characters are really different and the author has a great imagination. Try not get lost in this story I dare you.

This didn’t amaze me. However, it wasn’t terrible. The plot was interesting, but there were chapters that were so boring that they made the overall plot less important. It took away from the magnificence of it all. The characters were not that interesting either. The main character, Halen, was really whiny and acted rather weak despite her “amazing powers”. Even worse, she falls into insta love with Dax, a guy that saves her. Blah blah blah. I can’t ship relationships that are instant and aren’t even relevant, because let’s face it, the romantic side to this story was not that important.

BORING. Thing is, I’m not exactly one to give up on a book when it’s just 4%. In fact, I personally thought I was a bit drained out… especially from Puritan readings (it’s quite the brain exercise if you ask me). Except… it gets worse. It’s CONFUSING. If there’s one thing I really dislike, it’s people not giving me clarification. Please. If a math teacher doesn’t teach you clearly how to do a problem, how do you pass a math class with a passable grade? But goody gumdrops, does Duane confuse me.

There were fewer negative reviews so I guess that’s a good thing right? I think it only got three to be exact. It’s been a long time since I’ve read about mermaids and I’m so fascinated with them. I just hope this will turn out good. Happy reading to me for now! Book review to follow. 😀

Book Beginnings on Fridays is hosted by Rose City Reader, where we share the first sentence (or so) of the books we are reading, along with initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

Here’s the book’s beginning:

“Sketching his crooked smile had become a habit for Halen, not easily tamed.
Flipping through her notebook, the boy’s gray eyes stared back from the pages–
almost one hundred drawings in three months.”

I’m judging. It’s obsession. Lol! Well, that’s what I’ve thought initially. For someone to sketch a person for so many times, I bet that’s obsession or just in love? 😀 What do you think of the book’s beginning? You could share book beginnings on your current read too. Comment the link of your own Book Beginnings on Fridays so I can check it out and have an idea of amazing books that I would want to read. Come on! Join us!

  1. It sounds a little bit like City of Bones, if I remember correctly. I mean, the sketching part does. Otherwise it sounds really cool, because, let’s face it: sparks are super mega awesome!
